Morocco, Spain and Portugal were announced by FIFA as the venues for the 2030 World Cup. In an unprecedented format, however, the opening games will be held in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.
The unified candidacy of Moroccans, Spanish and Portuguese was the only one competing for the right to host the tournament.
The first edition of the World Cup took place in 1930, in Uruguay, with the home team winning.
The president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, had already announced this Wednesday (4) the games in South America.
“The 2030 Centenary World Cup starts where it all began. Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will host the opening matches of the #MundialCentenario!”, wrote Domínguez on the social network X, without giving further explanation.
Uruguay’s president, Luis Lacalle Pou, said the opening match of the tournament will be at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo.
“100 years later, Uruguay and our Centenary will be at the center of the world’s attention to experience the opening of the #MundialCentenario 2030. This recognition does justice to the pioneers who built the history of football!”, he stated, also in X.
In turn, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) said that the country’s team, world champion in 2022, “will play the first game of the group stage of the 2030 World Cup at home and with its people.”
