Technically, Gibson, known as “blue scuti” in the gaming world, has reached what gamers call the “kill screen,” a point where the Tetris code fails, crashing the game. This may not seem like a victory to those who think only high scores count, but it’s a coveted achievement in the world of video games, where highscores involve pushing hardware and software to their limits. On December 21st, the boy managed to trigger an elimination screen at level 157, which is considered a victory over the game. The creators of Tetris recognize victory. “Congratulations to ‘blue scuti’ for achieving this extraordinary achievement, a feat that defies all preconceived limits of this legendary game,” Tetris CEO Maya Rogers said in a statement. Rogers noted that Tetris will celebrate its 40th anniversary this year and called Gisbon’s victory a “monumental achievement.” During the live broadcast, the boy seemed in disbelief that he had beaten the game at that level. In the video, he appears to hyperventilate before gasping “Oh my God.” After calming down at the end of the game, Gibson says, “I can’t feel my fingers.”
