1/8: CPI defends breach of secrecy of PRF Silvinei Vasques – 07/18/2023 – Power

The January 8 CPI defended to the STF (Supreme Federal Court) the breaking of the secrecy of the former director of the PRF (Federal Highway Police) Silvinei Vasques, and said that it even considered arresting him for false testimony.

Vasques’ defense filed a complaint with the STF against breaching his bank, tax, telephone and telematic secrecy —approved last Tuesday (11). Minister Luís Roberto Barroso then gave the commission 48 hours to provide information.

In response to the minister this Tuesday (18), the CPI stated that “facts prior” to January 8 are also the target of the parliamentary investigation, and that Vasques is even mentioned in the work plan of the rapporteur, Senator Eliziane Gama (PSD -BAD).

The commission argued that it is necessary to investigate his participation in at least two episodes: the blockades on federal highways in the second round of the elections —which made it difficult for President Lula’s (PT) voters to get to the polls—, and the PRF’s omission “in the clearing of roads blocked by demonstrators who did not accept the result”.

“Thus, it is necessary to recognize that the purpose deviation argument presented in the initial petition does not deserve to succeed. It matters little that the petitioner was already retired on January 8, 2023 if there is a need to investigate his conduct in the months that preceded the aforementioned anti-democratic acts “, says the CPI.

The commission also claims that it even considered arresting Vasques after the June 20 deposition for false testimony. On the occasion, the former director of the PRF stated that the Northeast region was more inspected than the others because it has more accidents and buses.

“After hearing the petitioner as a witness, the collegiate understood that there were indications that the petitioner would have participated, as general director of the PRF, in possible preparatory events on January 8. It was even considered the arrest of the petitioner for false testimony”, says the piece.

“As the information provided by the petitioner as a witness was not sufficient to satisfactorily clarify the investigated facts, it is completely legitimate (and even natural) for the CPMI Collegiate to proceed with the transfer of secrecy, with the aim of contributing to the investigation of the facts.”

Vasques’ defense alleges that the contested acts violate his image and privacy rights, and that no evidence or evidence was presented to link him to the coup attacks that culminated in vandalism to the headquarters of the three Powers.

“There is no reason to breach the plaintiff’s privacy [Silvinei Vasques]behold, they requested the breach of secrecy without —by means of a vote— having the petitioner (witness) change his condition to that of investigated”, said the road police officer’s defense.
