Zema’s salary rises 258% and goes to R$ 37.5 thousand – 04/19/2023 – Politics

The Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais approved in a second round this Wednesday (19), by 39 votes to 18, a bill that retroactively increases the salary of the state governor, Romeu Zema (Novo), by 258%.

The text was presented by the Board of Directors of the House, at the request of the governor, and also increases the salaries of the deputy governor, secretaries and assistant secretaries. The project had been approved in the first round on the last day 4, by 45 votes to 21.

With the increase, the salary of the Chief Executive of Minas Gerais, which will have the biggest readjustment, goes from R$ 10,500 to R$ 37,589.96, an increase of 258%. Salaries for the vice-governor rise from R$10,250 to R$33,830.96, a 230% readjustment. Values ​​are retroactive to April 1.

Salaries for secretaries will increase from R$ 10,000 to R$ 31,238.19, and those of assistant secretaries, from R$ 9,000 to R$ 28,114.37, an increase of 212% in both cases.

The text also guarantees two other increases starting next year. In the case of the governor’s paycheck, the amount will increase from BRL 37,589.96 to BRL 39,717.69 in February 2024 and to BRL 41,845.49 in February 2025.

For the vice-governor, salaries will reach R$ 37,660.94 in two years. For secretaries, the remuneration from 2025 will be R$ 34,774.64.

The governor is mysterious about whether or not to receive the salary after the readjustment.

In a campaign promise still in 2018, when he ran for his first term for Palácio Tiradentes, Zema pledged to donate his salary until he caught up with the payment of state employees, which has already occurred.

On March 24, Zema took to social media to defend the increase.

“For Minas to continue advancing, it is necessary to attract and keep the most competent in the technical staff. There are more than 15 years of freezing the salaries of state secretaries, a situation incompatible with the position. I thank Almg who presented, at my request, PL (project of law) that solves the problem”, said Zema, in a post.

Deputy Ricardo Campos (PT), who is in opposition to the government, said he was against the readjustment because the increase does not reach more civil servants. “It can’t just be for the king’s friends,” he said, during the vote on the text in plenary.

Deputy Doctor Maurício (Novo) said that the increase rebalances the salaries of the governor, deputy and high-ranking state administration. “Since 2007 there has been no increase. Salaries are totally out of date,” he said.
