Zema says he would support Lula’s administrative reform – 02/03/2023 – Panel

A tough opponent of the PT, the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), says he would be willing to defend an administrative reform project sent by the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
“This is a reform that I would support. And I would even say: I am supporting the PT federal government in this case”, he told the Panel.
According to the governor, the administrative reform, with clearer rules for the federal public service and the possibility of reducing expenses to balance the accounts, would demonstrate Lula’s commitment to the quality of administrative management.
“Even if the reform is only for new positions, it will already give an important sign against spending money,” he said.
Zema also said that governors generally support tax reform, even if it results in some loss of revenue in the short term.
“We are willing to lose a little bit at this moment, because we know that in the long term it will be better. There will be a gain in efficiency and rationality in the Brazilian tax system”, he declared.
Defender of the spending ceiling, Zema complains that the discussion on reducing expenses is in the background in the current federal government.
He exemplifies with Lula’s concern to recompose the resources lost with the exemption of taxes on fuels by the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), last year.
“The federal government says it needs to raise R$ 28 billion. Why not also cut 28 billion as well?”, he asks.
