Zanin already took Moro out of his mind and took criticism as a ‘compliment’ – 06/01/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

Lawyer Cristiano Zanin, appointed this Thursday (1st) by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to a chair at the STF (Federal Supreme Court), has already taken as “praise” a criticism made in an ironic tone by the then judge Sergio Moro during an Operation Lava Jato hearing.

Recorded on video, the disagreement circulated again on the networks after confirmation of the defender’s appointment to the highest court in the country. In the images, it is possible to see Zanin taking Moro seriously.

The misunderstanding occurred at the end of 2016, in a hearing that heard the testimony of the former caretaker of the building where the Guarujá triplex associated with Lula was located.

“Oh, the defense [de Lula está] suggesting that she [a testemunha] Are you lying because of politics?”, said Moro, shortly before ending the testimony.

“Your Excellency is putting words in my mouth. I didn’t suggest anything, I asked questions absolutely pertinent to the subject”, replied Zanin.

Moro then suggested that the former caretaker could become the target of some retaliation by the PT’s defense. “Let’s see if he won’t suffer a criminal complaint, an action for compensation -the witness- by the defense”, said the then judge, who is now a senator for the state of Paraná and affiliated with União Brasil.

“It depends. When people commit illicit acts, they answer for their acts. I think that’s what the law says,” replied Zanin.

“It will file a claim for damages, then, against her [a testemunha], doctor?”, questioned Moro. “I don’t know. Are you advocating something for her?”, said Lula’s lawyer, in rejoinder.

The discussion did not stop there. The then magistrate suggested that the PT’s defense filed lawsuits “against everybody”. “I don’t think anyone is above the law. Just as people are subject to certain actions, the authorities should be too,” Zanin replied.

Moro continued, in an ironic tone: “That’s good, Doctor. A very good line of law.” It was then that Zanin finished: “I register Your Excellency and receive it as a compliment”.

47-year-old Paulista, Zanin became the PT’s lawyer in 2013 and became known for defending him in Lava Jato cases.

Appointed to the STF, he will now have to be approved by the full Senate to take office in court. Before, he will be questioned by the CCJ (Commission of Constitution and Justice) of the House.
