Live explanations in stadiums and on television of the decisions taken with the help of VAR during the Women’s World Cup will make the process of using the tool “more transparent”, said this Tuesday (18) FIFA’s head of arbitration, the Italian Pierluigi Collina.
The practice will be implemented for the first time in a major tournament from next Thursday, when the Women’s World Cup begins, after having been tested this year at the Club World Cup and the Under-20 World Cup.
Collina, chairman of FIFA’s Referees Committee, told reporters the tests had a positive response.
“We want to provide more transparency, greater understanding of the decisions made by a referee,” he explained.
“The referees here in Sydney have already participated in the training camp and things are going well. We are very confident that this new tool will be very positive.”
Fans have long called for greater transparency regarding the use of VAR.
The Women’s Cup referees will consult a pitchside monitor before announcing their decisions, the reasons they were based on, the players involved and a brief description of the bid via a stadium-wide microphone.
On the other hand, Collina admitted to being concerned that referees must give their explanations in English, which is not the native language of many.
“As with all things, there are pros and cons,” said the Italian. “Then we will discuss and consider what is best for the future.”
