Women’s Attorney’s Office accompanies arrest of suspected rape in Careiro da Várzea

The rape took place at night and the suspect, according to the police investigation, offered between 10 and 20 reais for the victim not to tell anyone.

The Special Prosecutor for Women of the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas accompanied this Thursday (13) the arrest of a 42-year-old man suspected of raping a 12-year-old child in the São João Community, in the municipality of Careiro da Várzea (25 kilometers from Manaus).

According to state deputy Alessandra Campelo (PSC), ALEAM’s Women’s Attorney, the agency heard the complaint by telephone in May. The rape took place at night and the suspect, according to the police investigation, offered between 10 and 20 reais for the victim not to tell anyone.

“Our team at the Public Prosecutor’s Office then sent the complaint to the Careiro da Várzea Police Station, which proceeded to investigate the case. Then we follow the progress of the complaint with the Judiciary”

explained the parliamentarian.

On the 7th of this month, Judge Larissa Padilha Roriz Penna, from the District of Careiro da Várzea, issued a temporary arrest warrant for the suspect for a period of 30 days. The arrest order took place on the morning of Thursday (13) and servants of the Women’s Attorney’s Office were in the municipality to verify the outcome of the case.

Heinous crime

Vulnerable rape is a crime provided for in Article 217 – A, of the Penal Code, and typifies any person who maintains sexual intercourse or practices another libidinous act with a minor under 14 years of age. The expected penalty is 8 to 15 years in prison. It is a heinous crime, that is, it is non-bailable, it is not subject to grace or pardon.

One of the attributions of the body led by Congresswoman Alessandra Campelo is to receive reports of threats or violations of women’s rights, in particular domestic and family violence, institutional, political and discrimination against women, at the state level, verify the origin, forward to the competent authorities and monitor the measures.
