Women of Law at USP demand a black jurist for the STF – 04/25/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

A group of women from the Faculty of Law of USP (University of São Paulo) articulated a letter addressed to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in which they claim the choice of a black jurist for the STF (Federal Supreme Court).

The document brings together everything from the vice-director of the institution, Ana Elisa Liberatore Silva Bechara, to professors such as Eunice Aparecida de Jesus Prudente and Susana Henriques da Costa and former female presidents of the Academic Center XI de Agosto. The current leader of the entity that represents the students, Manuela Morais, also endorses the initiative.

They point out that the Faculty of Law trained 57 ministers who occupy or have occupied a chair in the highest court in the country, but that none of the nominees was a woman — nor, black.

“We are sure that the presence of a black woman committed to women’s agendas in Brazil will serve as an inspiration for all the young black women who currently populate the classrooms of law courses in Brazil, most of whom, it is important to say, managed to enter these spaces thanks to the implementation of the policy of ethnic-racial quotas”, says the text, which is headed by women from the Academic Center XI de Agosto.

“The nomination of a black woman, supporter of feminist struggles and a real democracy, will be a decisive achievement for the steps of black women to continue putting our society in motion. We women understand that this act can demonstrate your commitment for the right of millions of black women to have an active voice in Brazilian institutions”, continues the manifesto.

The signatories ask that the appointment of a black jurist be made now for the vacancy of the recently retired minister Ricardo Lewandowski. In October of this year, a second vacancy will open with the retirement of the current president of the court, Rosa Weber.

“Although they are minorities in the Judiciary, black women form the largest population group in the country and we understand that the Federal Supreme Court must reflect what the Brazilian people are”, says the document addressed to Lula.
