A survey by the Strava app – one of the most popular apps to record physical activity in the world – indicates that women dedicate 15% less time to weekly physical activity than men.
The calculation was based on the more than 8 billion physical activity records saved in the app. According to Strava, the data was extracted from a base of approximately 100 million users.
If, on the one hand, women run less, on the other hand, they walk more. 55% of all walks recorded on the app are made by women. “We realize that women end up leaving physical activity to fulfill their domestic or social tasks and that needs to change. We want to emphasize to the whole community that walking is also a sport and that it is just as important as the others”, says Rosana Fortes , Strava’s country manager.
On average, walks last 42 minutes. On weekdays, with tighter weather, the average walking time for women is 39 minutes. On weekends, it goes up to 49 minutes.
The highlight is due to the age group between 18 and 29 years. This segmentation is responsible for 44% of the walks recorded by women.
This Thursday (2), Strava launched the Hot Girl Walk challenge. Membership is free, and for every person who walks 4 miles by the end of the month, the app will donate the equivalent of $4 to GRLS, an initiative to foster female leadership and empowerment around the world.
