Without agreement, government extends working group on Ferrogrão – 04/13/2024 – Panel

The working group created by the federal government to discuss Ferrogrão, which will take soy from Mato Grosso to Pará, was extended for 180 days. Behind the scenes, discussions about the route, which crosses environmental areas, are stalled.

At 1,000 km long, the Ferrogrão railway is supported by farmers and grain companies who say it would reduce dependence on roads and reduce the costs of transporting soy from Mato Grosso to river ports in the Amazon basin.

However, left-wing parties, such as the PSOL, and indigenous movements call for more studies to assess the impact of the railway on the environment and deforestation in the Amazon. Indigenous people advocate revising the route so that it does not cross the Jamanxim National Park, which is a Conservation Unit.
