More than 200 lovers of sports signed up to participate in the local stage of the event

Manaus (AM) – Aimed at tennis and beach tennis lovers, the 3rd stage of the Copa Escola Guga, entitled “Cup in the Amazon”, started this Monday (14) and continues until Sunday (20). The capital of Amazonas is one of the four cities chosen to host the national tournament, which started in April, in the city of Passo Fundo (RS).

More than 200 lovers of sports signed up to participate in the local stage of the event, which has free admission and takes place at the Escola Guga franchise in Amazonas, located at Rua Raimundo Nonato de Castro, nº 980, Letter B, in the Santo Agostinho neighborhood.

Little Lucas Branden Damasceno is one of the participants. At just eight years old, he has already accumulated six titles in national championships, the last one being won in July, during the 2023 Brazilian Tennis Championship, which took place in Minas Gerais.

Accompanied by his father, mother and brother – who are also tennis fans –, Lucas commented that he dreams of pursuing a professional career in the sport and, in the future, winning the title of champion at Roland Garros, like Gustavo Kuerten (Guga), founder of the Guga School. The former Brazilian tennis player was crowned Grand Slam champion in 1997, 2000 and 2001.

“I want to be a professional tennis player and play on the court at Roland Garros”,

declared the child athlete.

According to the little one’s father, Luís Damasceno, the whole family is involved in the modality and Lucas’s passion started at the age of five. Last year, while on vacation in Santa Catarina, he participated in the first tournament, aged seven.

“Then it woke up for us to start doing more specific training”,

Luís pointed out the importance of bringing competitions such as the “Amazon Cup – 3rd stage of the Guga School Cup” to Manaus, with the aim of enhancing the talents of the region, such as little Lucas.

“We are very far from the big centers, which have competitions almost weekly. Alexander’s initiative [sócio- proprietário da Escola Guga Manaus, ao lado da esposa, a administradora Rubia Chies] comes in favor of everyone who loves this sport. And you can be sure that, in every year you have, our family will participate”,

Mission: Build Champions

Inaugurated on January 25, 2020, the Guga School franchise arrived in Manaus after investment by Alexandre and Rubia, who are fascinated by tennis and arrived in the capital in 2006, along with their children Isabella and Alexandre Filho. In just over three years, the unit has already conquered new local fans in tennis and beach tennis, inspired by Guga.

“Guga’s name has a very strong appeal. If the children don’t know, surely the parents have seen and heard about him. Having a methodology created with the principles of this great athlete makes people at least curious to take an experimental class”,

The former tennis player’s trophy and equipment used during his second championship at Roland Garros – when Guga ‘knocked down’ two former world number 1s, Yevgeny Kafelnikov (from 1999) and Juan Carlos Ferrero (who became number 1 three years later) of the dispute, in 2003) – will be on display during the event from Friday (18th), with the aim of brightening the competition even more.

In addition to the trophies awarded to the champions and runners-up of the tournament on the last day of the event, throughout the week, a racket, racket bag and other gifts will be raffled off for subscribers. Junior admirers of the sport are not left out either, according to Rubia, with an exclusive space.

“For children between three and six years old, we have the ‘Tennis Festival’, with playful classes and lots of fun. The purpose of Escola Guga is: to inspire and transform people through sport and education”,
