With 1,116 deaths from dengue, Brazil surpasses the number from 2023 – 04/09/2024 – Health

Brazil has already recorded, from January 1st to April 8th, 2024, 1,116 deaths from dengue, according to data from the Arbovirus Monitoring Panel of the Ministry of Health. The number already exceeds the total number of deaths from dengue recorded in 2023, of 1,094 deaths.

Data from the folder shows that another 1807 deaths are under investigation.

The country had broken a record for dengue deaths in 2023. The previous record occurred in 2022, with 1,053 deaths.

In 2000, the country recorded four deaths from dengue, in three states: Minas Gerais (2), Espírito Santo (1) and Goiás (1). Until 2021, the country had never reached the level of 1,000 deaths.

The number of deaths from dengue, in 2024, corresponds to an average of 11 people killed per day. In March, the country surpassed the record for probable cases in a year. This Tuesday (9), the mark already reaches 2,963,994 cases.

A recent article published by the Center for Strategic Studies at Fiocruz analyzes dengue deaths and also points out that lack of assistance and inattention to the potential worsening that patients may experience are the main reasons associated with dengue deaths.

On Tuesday (2), during an interview with journalists, the Ministry of Health stated that Brazil is experiencing a period of decline in the dengue epidemic. In seven states and the Federal District, the peak has already been reached and the disease curve is now decreasing. Another 12 federation units are stable. But seven states, especially in the Northeast, have a tendency for cases and deaths to increase.

The states with an upward trend in cases are Alagoas, Bahia, Maranhão, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte and Sergipe. Historical trends, however, indicate that the peak of epidemics occurs between March and April.

The drop, considered consolidated by the department, occurs in Acre, Amazonas, Espírito Santo, Federal District, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Piauí and Roraima.

Amapá, Ceará, Mato Grosso, Pará, Paraíba, Paraná, Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Rondônia, Rio Grande do Sul and Tocantins are stable.
