Iranduba (AM) – Governor Wilson Lima presented, this Monday (9), an overview of the work to combat fires in the state, which has already reached almost 2 thousand fires fought by the Amazonas Military Fire Department (CBMAM) and support teams. He inspected the troop’s operations in a forested area in the Cacau Pirêra district, in Iranduba (27 kilometers from Manaus), where fires were controlled.

During a visit to the Fire Department unit in the municipality, Wilson Lima thanked the military for their commitment to fighting the fires. The base opened in 2022 and is located at kilometer 8 of the AM-070 highway.

Between July 12 and October 8, almost 2,000 fires have already been fought in the state, 631 in the capital and 1,345 in the interior. Furthermore, from January to the beginning of October, 16,219 hot spots have been detected, 55.8% (9,126) in the south of Amazonas and 12.6% (2,032) in the metropolitan region of Manaus.

“We have already fought 1,976 fires, they increase significantly at the weekend. Just to give you an idea, yesterday (8), there were 97 fires fought. We have already managed to provide a very significant response in this region, especially in Cacau Pirêra, which was a place that was our concern”, stated Governor Wilson Lima.

The work of firefighters is reinforced by federal agents. On October 2, the Government of Amazonas received the support of 23 agents from the National Center for the Prevention and Combat of Forest Fires (Prevfogo), the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources (Ibama). These agents are already working to support the firefighting in the Cacau Pirêra District, in Iranduba.

The governor also reinforced that the Government of Amazonas has acted rigorously in combating illegal fires. Until the beginning of this month, fines had already been imposed that, combined, exceed R$17 million, according to the Amazonas Environmental Protection Institute (Ipaam).

Wilson Lima also met, in Iranduba, with the general commander of the Amazonas Military Fire Department, Colonel Orleiso Muniz, and the Secretaries of State for the Environment, Eduardo Taveira, and Public Security, Colonel Vinicius Almeida.

Aircraft support

The Government of Amazonas already has the support of four aircraft to intensify firefighting. One was provided by the Government of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul and the other by the Government of the Federal District.

The helicopter coming from Mato Grosso do Sul has bambi-bucket equipment that can dump 550 liters of water. The aircraft coming from the Federal District is an Airtractor model with the capacity to transport 3,100 liters of water per trip, being refueled with the support of a CBMAM tanker truck.

There is also an aircraft provided by the Navy, equipped with a bambi-bucket capable of dumping 300 liters of water. Another aircraft from the Government of Amazonas, from the Integrated Department of Air Operations (Dioa) of the Public Security Secretariat (SSP/AM), is used to transport fighters to areas that are difficult to access.

Task force in Iranduba

Since September 25th, the Fire Department has been carrying out a task force to fight a fire in a forested area measuring approximately three kilometers in the Cacau Pirêra District, in Iranduba. In total, more than 40 firefighters are working.

With the aircraft, air support is being carried out with the dumping of water and the transport of military personnel to the location, given that the area is difficult to access.

“Since July, we have already dealt with almost two thousand fires, the vast majority of which are in the south of Amazonas. We are employing all qualified personnel, with vehicles, with personal protective equipment so that we can do the work, the most effective response possible. And the governor is also on the frontline with us, he is on the combat line and has given the necessary support for the Fire Department to carry out its actions”, reinforced the CBMAM commander, Cel. Orleilso Muniz.

Teams

Currently, the Fire Department has been fighting fires through operations Tamoiotatá, Aceiro and Céu Limpo, focusing on the metropolitan region and southern Amazonas, which concentrate the largest number of fires.

There are more than 500 state agents, including firefighters, civil and military police, agents from the National Center for the Prevention and Combat of Forest Fires (Prevfogo), the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources (Ibama), inspectors from the Institute of Environmental Protection of Amazonas (Ipaam), men from the National Force, as well as brigade members hired by the Department of the Environment (Sema), working to combat deforestation and illegal burning in the state.
