GCF Task Force

Announcements were made on the third day of the GCF Task Force Annual Meeting in the state of Yucatan, Mexico

Merida (Mexico) – During the first day of the open sessions of the 13th Annual Meeting of the Task Force of Governors for Climate and Forests, this Wednesday (8), Governor Wilson Lima announced the construction of three Schools of the Forest in Conservation Units (UCs) of the State and also launched the first Atlas of Regulated Fishing Agreements in the Amazon.

“We managed to make a lot of progress in terms of governance and regulatory frameworks. One of them is the fishing agreement, in which fishing is authorized only for those who live in that community, to avoid predatory fishing and guarantee income for residents. We also take a very important step in education. In addition to teaching mediated by technology, now we are going to build our Escola da Floresta, a school built from certified wood, seized wood, using rainwater and solar energy”,

highlighted the governor.

The announcements were made during the opening dialogue “Governance and public policy for sustainable economic development”, in which Lima participated as a panelist, alongside the current president of the Task Force, the governor of Yucatán (Mexico), Mauricio Vila Dosal, and the governor of the province of East Kalimantan (Indonesia), Isran Noor.

Forest Schools

The Escola da Floresta project, by the State Secretariat for Education and Sports, will result in the construction of three units in the Environmental Protection Area (APA) Caverna do Maroaga, in the municipality of Presidente Figueiredo; in the Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS) of Uatumã, in São Sebastião do Uatumã; and on RDS Piagaçu Purus, in the municipality of Beruri.

In the next few days, Governor Wilson Lima will go to São Sebastião do Uatumã to sign the service order for the start of construction of the first unit of the Escola da Floresta, which aims to strengthen Environmental Education actions in the Conservation Units (UCs) of the municipalities, transforming the places into spaces for democratic management and respect for socio-cultural diversity and human rights, with a view to promoting socio-environmental sustainability in teaching units.

The schools were designed to have a low environmental impact and will be built in a sustainable model, using wood from sustainable forest management and also wood seized from illegal extraction activities destined by the Institute for Environmental Protection of Amazonas (Ipaam); seeking to preserve natural resources, such as fauna, flora, soil and water resources in a socially fair and economically viable way for the communities surrounding the units.

Sustainability in schools will be promoted based on three interrelated dimensions: physical space, management and curriculum.

Atlas of Fisheries Agreements

The governor presented the Atlas of Fishing Agreements and explained that the State has advanced in the implementation of environmental policies to guarantee the protection of fishing resources and, at the same time, generate income for the traditional riverside communities, through fishing agreements.

During the round table he participated in, Wilson Lima presented the story of fisherman Domingo Charles Araújo, who, along with other residents of the community of Vila Medeiros, in the Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS) in Uacari, in the municipality of Carauari, monitor the region’s rivers to prevent illegal pirarucu fishing.

With a participatory construction between the community and public agents and regulated by the Secretary of State for the Environment (Sema), the agreements establish specific rules for aquatic environments, with the aim of resolving conflicts and encouraging sustainable development, as a mechanism to combat poverty and ensure food security for thousands of families, inside and outside Conservation Units.

“The agreements are initiatives that are aligned with the Manaus Action Plan, since they have at their core the orderly development of the fishing production chain. This atlas condenses the efforts made by Sema in this agenda, so important for the construction of more balanced aquatic environments for species and for man”,

said the Secretary of State for the Environment, Eduardo Taveira.

From 2019 to 2021, the Government of Amazonas enabled the implementation of 10 new fishing agreements, generating benefits for 55 communities, 1,198 families and 1,755 fishermen. The Atlas condenses the information and maps of 34 areas ordered by Sema, focusing on the management of arapaima, boosting sport fishing tourism, environmental conservation, ornamental fishing, among other purposes.
