Organization recorded more than 170,000 deaths in the last eight weeks
The World Health Organization (WHO) informed, this Monday (30), that it will not declare the end of the pandemic and the state of alert caused by covid-19. In 2020, WHO declared the virus a global public health emergency.
In a statement, the director general of the organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that he will follow the recommendation of the covid-19 monitoring committee and maintain the disease as a global public health emergency, the highest level of alert of the entity.
“While the world is in a better position than it was during the peak of Omicron transmission a year ago, more than 170,000 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported globally in the last eight weeks,” he explained.
Tedros warned that surveillance and genetic sequencing of the virus has slowed around the world, making it harder to track known variants and detect new variants. In addition, according to him, health systems struggle against the shortage and fatigue of professionals.
“Vaccines, therapies and diagnostics have been and continue to be essential in preventing serious disease, saving lives and relieving pressure on health systems and healthcare workers.”
“The response to covid-19 remains hampered in many countries, unable to provide these tools to the populations most in need, the elderly and health professionals”, completed the director-general of the WHO.
Committee
The WHO International Health Regulations Emergency Committee has concluded that COVID-19 remains a dangerous infectious disease with the capacity to cause substantial harm to global health and health systems.
