Who is Luiz Carlos Hauly, who will inherit Deltan Dallagnol’s vacancy

Heir to the seat of Deltan Dallagnol (Podemos-PR), impeached by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), economist from Paraná Luiz Carlos Hauly, companion of the former Lava Jato prosecutor, added just over 11 thousand votes in the elections of the year past.

Now 72 years old, Hauly has a long history in politics that began in the 1970s when he won the election for the position of councilor in Cambé, a municipality located 400 kilometers from Curitiba, where he also held the position of mayor. His background in economics led him to act as secretary of finance in Paraná in the late 1980s during the term of former governor Alvaro Dias, also from Podemos.

In Brasília, he was a federal deputy for seven consecutive terms, between 1991 and 2009. He was already a member of three parties before joining the current party: MDB, PP and PSDB. The economist is the author of a bill that provides for the creation of a simplified tax, called Tax on Goods and Services (IBS), provided for in the tax reform that is currently under discussion in Congress.

Hauly won the vacancy after a decision by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) handed down this Friday (9), which overturned the understanding of the Regional Electoral Court of Paraná (TRE-PR), which had determined that Pastor Itamar Paim (PL-PR) would be Dallagnol’s alternate. Paim won 47 thousand votes in the elections, that is, more than four times the votes of Hauly.

In an interview with Estadão this Saturday (10), the economist said he was in favor of life from conception to natural death and a defender of moral values. However, while Deltan Dallagnol was one of the strongest voices of opposition to the Lula government in the Chamber, the deputy from Podemos is showing signs that he will not seek to make life difficult for the Lula government.

“I have always been an opponent of the PT, but we have many points in common, such as the issue of the fiscal framework, tax reform and other structural reforms. So, I want to have this freedom to vote whatever I understand for the good of the country. But I am no longer about to make emphatic opposition, as I have done in the past. I’m more about building bridges than breaking bridges,” he declared.
