WhatsApp stops working from this Tuesday (24), on cell phones with operating systems prior to Android 5.0. This is because the application will no longer support previous versions on this date, according to the messaging application’s website.

Therefore, WhatsApp stops receiving updates on these devices with older versions.

Until then, the messenger was recommended for devices with Android 4.1 or higher and on devices with iOS 12 —incompatible, for example, with the iPhone 5— or later. For iPhones, nothing changes.

On October 24 last year, the application was no longer supported on iPhones equipped with iOS 10 and iOS 11.

Smartphones without support also no longer receive features enhanced by WhatsApp. At the end of last month, for example, Meta (holding company that owns WhatsApp) announced that it will launch options for generating stickers with generative artificial intelligence like ChatGPT.

Outdated devices are also more vulnerable to cyber attacks, which can result in losses.

Android 4.1 was released in 2012 and was equipped on the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini VE and Galaxy Ace. Android 4.4 is from 2013 and powers the Galaxy A7 and A5, from Samsung, and the Vibe Z2, from Lenovo.
