WhatsApp announces, this Thursday (17), the option to send photos in high quality. The application lowers the resolution of images to save internet data consumption.
The rollout will be gradual. The company hopes to roll out the feature to all users in the coming weeks. To access the tool, make sure the app is up to date on your smartphone.
Photos in original quality remain end-to-end encrypted, which ensures privacy when sending messages. WhatsApp also claims that it plans to release HD videos, in high resolution, soon – without specifying a date.
The compressed version of the images remains the app’s default “to ensure that sharing media via WhatsApp remains fast and reliable.”
The user can choose to receive the standard version or the high quality (HD) version when the connection is weak.
Today, it is already possible to send images and videos in their original quality by selecting the “Forward documents” option, although it is no longer possible to view them in the application.

- Access WhatsApp settings
- Go to the “Storage and Data” tab
- Click “Photo Quality”
- Select “High Quality”
