What punishments should athletes receive?

O Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) predicts that players convicted in the betting scheme investigated by the Public Ministry of Goiás may suffer harsh punishments in the sporting sphere. The STJD projects suspension of up to two years, a fine of R$ 100,000 and even banishment from sports competitions.

“With the identification and proof of the participation of athletes, they will be denounced and punished with suspension penalties of 180 to 720 days, combined with a fine of up to R$ 100 thousand and, in cases of recurrence, the elimination of the athlete (penalties foreseen in articles 243 and 243-A. both of the CBJD)”, informed the court’s Attorney, in a statement.

The STJD also informed that “it is investigating and investigating all the cases triggered in the Maximum Penalty Operation”, in close contact with the Goiás Public Prosecutor’s Office and the CBF, which has a partnership with the company Sportradar to identify suspicious movements on game betting sites. of the national championships.

The court is expected to start making decisions next week on the players denounced by the MP. Some may suffer a 30-day provisional suspension. The STJD emphasized that “there is no chance of paralyzing any competition or canceling matches” because there is no evidence of participation by clubs and bookmakers in the scheme.

In its second phase, the so-called Operation Maximum Penalty deepened the investigation by the Public Ministry of Goiás (MP-GO) and denounced 14 players to Justice this week. Other athletes were only mentioned in a MP document, without formal accusation. Some of these have already been removed from their clubs in recent days.

In total, 12 players were separated from the daily activities of their teams: Vitor Mendes (Fluminense), Bryan Garcia and Pedrinho (athletic), Richard (Cruzeiro), Nino Paraiba (América-MG), Maurício (Internacional), Raphael Rodrigues (Avaí), Alef Manga and Jesus Trindade (coritiba), Paulo Miranda (without a club), Fernando Neto (São Bernardo) and Eduardo Bauermann (Santos).
