A 5-year-old child was shot indoors while playing in her room in Rio de Janeiro
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva commented with indignation on the death of five-year-old girl Eloah Passos. On Saturday (12), she was shot inside the house, while playing in her room, in the community known as Cova da Onça, in Morro do Dendê, in Rio de Janeiro.
“What is this stray bullet? Someone shot that way, that bullet didn’t go astray. That bullet was thrown that way to hit someone and it caught a five-year-old child. Where do we end up with this type of behavior, violence? And many times it is the police themselves who shoot”,
said Lula, this Monday (14th), during the weekly program Conversa com o Presidente, transmitted by Canal Gov.
Eloah was hit during a conflict caused by the arrival of military police to disperse a demonstration by residents against the death of Wendel Eduardo, 17 years old, in an action by the Military Police (PM) in Dendê, which had occurred earlier. The Commander of the PM battalion on Ilha do Governador was removed.
“When we talk like that, people think we are against the police. We are not against the police, we want well-prepared, well-educated police officers with a lot of intelligence. Now, what you can’t do is shoot at random, not knowing where you’re shooting. Because a stray bullet is a bit like that: I shot someone and killed someone else. What joke is this? This country doesn’t need that,” argued the president.
culture of peace
He commented on what happened when talking about the possibilities that Brazil has to grow economically, to improve the living conditions of the population, and about the importance of creating a culture of peace in the country and in the world.
Last week, at an event in Rio de Janeiro, the president had already criticized the killing of innocent people by police. He stated that poor people cannot be confused with criminals.
“People from the periphery need to be treated with respect so that what happened to a boy murdered by an unprepared policeman never happens,” Lula stressed. “We cannot blame the police, but we have to say that a citizen who shoots a boy who has already fallen is irresponsible and was not prepared from a psychological point of view to be a policeman”,
added at the time.
The comment was in relation to Thiago Menezes, 13, who died during a police operation on the 7th, in Cidade de Deus, in the West Zone of Rio.
