West Ham’s training this Wednesday was marked by a tribute to International Women’s Day. England team players were able to choose inspirational women in their lives, whose names were spelled on the shirts.
Most athletes on the London team chose to honor their mothers. Fifteen of them wore blouses with the word “mother” or derivatives or with their names.
“I chose to name myself after my mother to show how grateful I am for all the time and effort she put into helping me and my two brothers become the men we are today. We will be forever grateful to her,” explained team captain and England midfielder Declan Rice.
There were those who also chose to honor a big name in the sport: midfielder Michail Antonio wore a shirt with the name of former American tennis player Serena Williams, winner of 23 grand slams. The player said he used to watch her and her sister Venus’ matches at Wimblendon, the London grand slam. For him, Serena is a role model for everyone:
— I could have chosen several inspiring women, but I ended up with Serana. She was the best tennis player of her generation and showed what you can do if you put your mind to it and believe in yourself. The achievements speak for themselves. She’s very talented.
Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paquetá made a double tribute. He stamped “Duda e Cris” on his shirt, in honor of his wife Maria Eduarda and mother Cristiane.
