A three-day expedition, organized by ABAV/AP (Brazilian Association of Travel Agencies in Amapá) took a group of 12 people to carry out a technical visit to the Montanhas do Tumucumaque National Park, in the municipality of Serra do Navio. The idea was to offer subsidies so that agents, guides, scholars and entrepreneurs in the sector can format regular visit packages.
And it’s not just any destination. It is the largest national park in Brazil and the largest forest park on the planet, with 3.8 million hectares, with territory distributed across the municipalities of Almeirim (PA), Calçoene, Laranjal do Jari, Oiapoque, Pedra Branca do Amapari and Serra of the Ship (AP). But access to it is still very restricted.
The Tumucumaque Mountains National Park is the largest fully protected Brazilian conservation unit. The place has trails, many waterfalls and viewpoints where visitors and tourists can have direct contact with nature.
According to the president of ABAV/AP, Elenilton Marques, the mission achieved all its objectives. “We personally checked not only the attractions, but also all the difficulties in getting there, walking the trails, interacting with the park rangers, to format a tourist product, as we know that for every R$ 10 that the tourist invests in this trip, R$7 stays in the surrounding communities, and that is what is expected of him, as compensatory measures”it says.
Logistics – Access to Parque do Tumucumaque is via BR-210, in Macapá, to the city of Serra do Navio, a distance of 193 kilometers. From there, you have to travel a 78-kilometer route by boat (boats) to the ICMBio Base (Instituto Chico Mendes da Biodiversidade), which is the one that authorizes the names of visitors in advance.
