The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) André Mendonça said he hoped that the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro at the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) would be “fair” and without “persecution”. The statement was given by the minister this Wednesday (28) at a press conference at the XI Legal Forum in Lisbon.
This Tuesday (27), Minister Benedito Gonçalves, rapporteur for the action, voted to make Bolsonaro ineligible for eight years from the 2022 elections. The Electoral Court will resume the trial on Thursday (29) in the morning.
“I did not follow the trial, I quickly saw in the press a vote in a harmful direction for the former president. What I hope for is a fair trial, just as we do not want persecution on one side, just as persecution is criticized against certain political actors”, said Mendonça.
Indicated by Bolsonaro to the STF, André Mendonça does not occupy a chair in the TSE. “We cannot, for convenience or circumstance, condone attitudes that do not guarantee the same rights of defense and the same justice for those who do not think ideologically as we do”, stressed the minister.
