The Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, stated on Monday night (23) that the government will expand federal forces in Rio de Janeiro. This afternoon, at least 35 buses and a train were set on fire in the city’s West Zone. According to the state government, the attacks occurred in retaliation for the death of militiaman Zinho’s nephew, in the Três Pontes community. Matheus da Silva Rezende, known as Teteu or Faustão, was killed during an exchange of gunfire with the Civil Police. He was considered number 2 in command of his uncle’s militia.
“We will further increase the federal teams, in support of the State and the Municipality. In a federative system, we have to respect the other entities of the Federation and seek convergent actions, as much as possible. This is how we acted in other states that went through Security crises in 2023. We will have new decisions in the coming days, under the guidance of President Lula”, said the minister at the social network.
Earlier, the governor of Rio, Cláudio Castro (PL), stated that he contacted Dino to talk about the situation in Rio. According to the minister, this Tuesday (24) “Executive Secretary Ricardo Cappelli will be in Rio; the National Secretary of Public Security, Tadeu Alencar; and the Commander of the National Force, Colonel Alencar”.
Dino announced that they will meet with the Superintendencies of the Federal Police and the Federal Highway Police and also with teams from the state and municipal governments. “We are maintaining and expanding daily operations in Rio, within federal jurisdiction, carrying out arrests, investigations, patrols and seizures,” he highlighted.
