Saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter died at the age of 89 in a Los Angeles hospital on Thursday. The information was confirmed by the musician’s publicist, Alisse Kingsley, to The New York Times.
One of the greatest exponents of the saxophone, Shorter won 11 Grammy statuettes, in addition to other awards. The artist began his career in the 1960s and participated in groups such as Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Miles Davis’s Second Great Quintet and Weather Report.
On social media, singer Milton Nascimento mourned the musician’s death. “Wayne Shorter was – and always will be – more than a musical partner. Since we met, we have never been apart.
In 1975, he asked me to record “Native Dancer”, and it changed my life and career forever,” he wrote.
“Last year, when I performed in Los Angeles, he couldn’t come to see me, as he had suffered a domestic accident the night before, but I managed to go to his house, and we had a beautiful afternoon, worthy of our many years of brotherhood and history,” said Milton.
