The Golden State Warriors announced, on Wednesday afternoon (17), the death of Dejan Milojevic, 46. The Serbian, who had a productive career as a winger in international basketball, had been working as an assistant coach for the Californian team.
According to the statement, Milojevic suffered a heart attack during a private team dinner in Salt Lake on Tuesday night. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he died on Wednesday morning.
“We are absolutely devastated by Dejan’s sudden departure,” Golden State coach Steve Kerr said. “It is a shock, a tragic blow to everyone associated with the Warriors and an incredibly difficult time for his family, his friends and everyone who had the incredible pleasure of working with him.”
Milojevic was in his third season as an assistant with Golden State. In the NBA, the North American basketball league, he also played for the Atlanta Hawks, the San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Rockets. Previously, he worked as a head coach at Serbia’s Mega Basket and Montenegro’s Buducnost.
It was as a player, however, that he had the greatest impact. He played for several European teams and was elected the best player in the Adriatic League three times, which brings together teams from countries that formed the former Yugoslavia.
Even before the death was confirmed, the NBA had already announced the postponement of the match between Golden State and the Utah Jazz, initially scheduled for Wednesday night. A new date will still be announced.
