Wallace: Cruzeiro and player go to STJD for release – 04/11/2023 – Sport

This Monday (10), the defenses of the volleyball player Wallace de Souza, 35, and his club, Cruzeiro, filed a writ of guarantee at the STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice) seeking the release of the opposing champion olympic for the semifinals of the Superliga.

After posting about shooting in the face of the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), Wallace was suspended for 90 days by the Ethics Committee of the COB (Olympic Committee of Brazil). The punishment was decided at trial on the 3rd.

The hook started counting on February 3, when the athlete was provisionally removed, and ends on May 3. With that, he, in theory, no longer acts in this Superliga season. The player is also banned from representing the Brazilian national team for a year, despite having already announced that he would no longer play for the national team.

In a note, Cruzeiro says that thes defenses of the athlete and the club question the validity of the decision in the context of competitions, especially those promoted by the CBV (Brazilian Volleyball Confederation), “preventing the athlete from exercising his profession”.

“Wallace’s suspension, after sharing a post on a social network, was an exclusive decision of the Ethics Council of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, which cannot expand to competitions such as the Superliga, for reasons unrelated to the athlete’s profession, which has any indictment, investigation or conviction against him”, says the club from Minas Gerais.

The former national team player’s defense team also states that the COB’s Code of Ethical Conduct, in accordance with its article 3, does not cover private acts by athletes, limiting its application to acts performed by them within the scope of sports activity.

Therefore, for them, Wallace’s suspension from national volleyball competitions is being interpreted irregularly by the Brazilian confederation.

Cruzeiro, for the time being without its main opponent, enters the court next Saturday night (15) to face São José for the first match of the Superliga semifinals.

In late January, Wallace opened up to questions in his Instagram comment box. One of his 351,000 followers asked if he would shoot the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in the face. Wallace asked if anyone would do that.

Hours later, he deleted the post. Days after the repercussions, he recorded a video apologizing. “I’m apologizing. It was an unfortunate post I ended up making. I messed up,” he acknowledged.

Cruzeiro, under pressure from its sponsors, removed the athlete.

In the following days, the AGU (Advocacia Geral da União) asked the board of the Brazilian Olympic Committee to ban Wallace from the sport and impose a fine of R$ 100,000, which did not happen, and the suspension was accepted.

The player was also notified of an infraction at the STJD, but the body filed the complaint because it believed there was no relationship between the post and the sport played by Wallace.
