Real Madrid and Brazil striker Vinícius Jr. will lead a special FIFA anti-racism committee made up of players who will suggest stricter punishments for discriminatory behavior in football, world football’s governing body president Gianni Infantino told Reuters on Thursday.
The Brazilian striker was racially abused by fans when Real played Valencia in La Liga in May, the 10th incident of its kind involving the 22-year-old that LaLiga has reported to prosecutors this season.
“There will be no more football with racism. Games must be stopped immediately when this happens. Enough!”, said Infantino, after meeting with Vinícius and the Brazilian national team, which plays Guinea in Barcelona on Saturday, as part of an anti-racism campaign led by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).
“I asked Vinícius to lead this group of players who will present stricter punishments against racism, which will later be implemented by all football authorities around the world”he said. “We need to listen to players and what they need to work in a safer environment. We are taking this very seriously.”
