Vini Jr: law approved in Rio provides for interruption of matches – 06/07/2023 – Sport

The Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro approved, this Tuesday (6), as a matter of urgency, a bill to combat racism in stadiums and sports arenas in the state.

Called Vini Jr state policy, the proposal provides that sports matches are interrupted when racist manifestations occur.

The interruption will last as long as the event organizer or the match delegate deems necessary and as long as the racist attitudes do not stop.

The game may be terminated in cases where racist acts are committed by groups.

The project will be forwarded to Governor Cláudio Castro (PL), who has up to 15 working days to sanction or veto it.

“We have to, once and for all, extirpate this cancer of Brazilian society that is racism”, stated the original author of the project, deputy Prof. Josemar (PSOL). The proposal was co-authored by other parliamentarians.

The deputies also approved the granting of the Tiradentes Medal, the highest honor of the Assembly, to the player Vini Jr, victim of a racist attack in the Spanish Championship on May 21.

The case is treated in the sports marketing market as a watershed, capable of causing changes in the formulation of sponsorship contracts and putting pressure on companies to adopt a firmer stance on the racial issue.

The actions in the Rio Assembly are part of a mobilization of several deputies after the racist attacks against the Real Madrid striker and the Brazilian national team in matches in Europe.

The medal was proposed by Deputy Verônica Lima (PT) and was also co-authored by several parliamentarians.
