Video: how Samsung’s AI works to edit photos – 01/25/2024 – Tech

Samsung has loaded its camera with generative artificial intelligence features (like ChatGPT), although it hasn’t made any major changes to its lens array in its latest batch of launches this month.
The Galaxy AI artificial intelligence package, launched with the new generation of S24 devices, includes five photography solutions: instant slow motion, night photography, digital zoom of up to 100 times with better quality, shadow and reflection removal and editing with generative AI .
A Sheet tested these features, developed by Samsung in partnership with Google — the search giant developed an AI model made to work on cell phones, the Gemini Nano. Some work satisfactorily and others not so much.
Part of this became available on older devices, through a software update. The custom Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chip, however, makes a difference and the tools work with more speed and fluidity on the S24.
After pre-sale started on the 17th, the device began to be delivered to stores and homes on Wednesday (24).
All of these features, for now, are free.
INSTANT SLOW MOTION
Available only on the S24, the feature slows down videos shot in normal mode, at 60 frames per second.
Previous versions of the device already filmed in “slowmotion”, but it was necessary to activate a recording mode beforehand, which captures 240 frames per second.
The new tool uses AI to create the necessary frames to ensure the slow motion effect. Just press your finger against the screen and wait.
A Sheet tested the effect with a recording of the trajectory of a thrown paper ball. The slow motion provided by the AI leaves a slightly artificial trail, but delivers a satisfactory result.
MAGIC EDITION
Another editing feature after capturing the image is the so-called “magic edit”, which allows you to intuitively select objects and move them around the image, or delete them.
See how it works in the video below.
The option to move images generally works better. Erasing objects can leave distortions and artifacts in the photograph as in the example below.

Images edited with artificial intelligence receive a seal to indicate the intervention with technology. However, it is possible to use another older AI tool from Samsung itself to erase the seal, as shown in the video below.
NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
Samsung also added a mode that optimizes photos taken in low-light environments.
Available on the more modes screen, the tool is called “noturno”, in Portuguese, or nightography in English.
This feature corrects the granularity caused by the increased sensitivity of the camera sensor due to the lack of light — a technology called ISO. This is done with artificial intelligence, which also enhances contours.

REMOVE SHADOWS AND REFLECTIONS
Another AI feature option on the new Galaxy is to erase reflections and shadows with one click. The feature makes photos cleaner without much effort.
Shadow detection, however, has a degree of error that erases darker objects in the image, despite the photo owner’s wishes.

UP TO 100x DIGITAL ZOOM WITH AI
Another feature only available on the Galaxy S24 Ultra is 100x zoom. This option was already available on the S23 Ultra. Samsung, however, announced that the Galaxy AI system can improve the quality of images with high levels of digital zoom.
The camera is functional at this zoom level thanks to stabilization technologies and an auxiliary window that indicates where the cell phone’s crosshairs are in the top right corner of the screen.
A Sheet managed to capture a 15 cm doll drawn on a board from about 50 meters away with a 100x hands-free zoom. However, there is a great loss of quality.

MORE RESOURCES
During the launch of the Galaxy S24 line, Samsung announced simultaneously with Instagram that owners of the new devices would be the first to be able to publish Full HD photos (with a resolution of 1920×1080) on the social network that works in high definition (1280×720).
This in theory allows for more details and greater color definition.
Samsung also says that generative AI is used to improve photographs overall. The user can choose the level of intervention in the camera settings.
IT WORSES IN OPTICAL ZOOM
In the only change to the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s lens game, Samsung decreased the optical zoom of one of the two telephoto cameras. To compensate, it increased the lens resolution from 12 megapixels to 50 megapixels.
Thus, the company claims that it guarantees optical zoom quality up to 10 times closer.
