The Justice of Rio de Janeiro decided that the Estádio de São Januário, belonging to the Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama, in the north of the city, will remain closed to the public. The decision is taken by the Second Chamber of Private Law of the Rio Court of Justice, which understood that the measure should be maintained until an expert examination is carried out for the safety of fans, residents of the region and other people circulating around the venue.

By 2 votes to 1, Vasco da Gama’s appeal for the stadium to hold matches behind closed doors was partially granted. For the rapporteur of the process, judge Renata Cotta, the responsibility for consumer safety at the entrance and exit of the event lies with the main club. “Event and consumer safety is a fundamental principle of sport”highlighted in his vote.

The magistrate recalled the acts of vandalism and disorder that took place on June 22, after Vasco da Gama’s game against Goiás in São Januário. She also stated that the games without the presence of an audience, held at the stadium, demonstrated that the measure was effective, since there were no incidents in the matches held after the implementation of the measure.

The judge Renata Cotta also said that the cancellation of supporters plans, alleged in the process, has not been proven and that it will be up to the court of origin, in the first instance, to assess the safety conditions of the stadium after carrying out technical expertise on site.
