Vasco confirms hiring of Argentine coach Ramón Díaz, formerly of Al Hilal

O Vasco da Gama finally announced its new coach, the Argentine Ramon Diaz. The 63-year-old coach had been in Rio de Janeiro since Wednesday (12th) and even coached the team, but had not yet been made official. The coach arrives at Vasco after spending two seasons at Al Hilal, from Saudi Arabia.
Ramón Díaz signs a contract for a year and a half, until the end of 2024, with the team from Rio de Janeiro and arrives with the responsibility of avoiding another relegation of the team from São Januário. In addition to him, Vasco confirmed the arrival of assistants Emiliano Díaz and Juan Romanazzi, physical trainer Diego Pereira and performance analyst Damian Paz.
In 2020, Ramón Díaz was the character of a curious case when he signed with Botafogo and was fired before debuting. With health problems, the coach had to stay away and had his debut postponed. As Botafogo was fighting against relegation, the club opted to terminate the bond even before the debut.
In Saudi Arabia, Ramón Díaz won the national league three times, two national cups and was also a finalist in the last Club World Cup. This was the coach’s second spell at Al Hilal, in addition to having already commanded Al Ittihad quickly.
The Argentine began his career as a coach at River Plate and was champion of the 1996 Libertadores with the club. He also has spells at San Lorenzo (ARG), Independiente (ARG), América (MEX), Libertad (PAR), Ittihad Club (SAU) and Al-Nasr SC (EAU), in addition to the Paraguay national team.
On Wednesday, the coach was received by fans and journalists at an airport in Rio de Janeiro and went straight to CT Moacyr Barbosa. The commander was in charge of training for the squad on Thursday and Friday Ramón’s debut should be against Athletico Paranaense on the other Sunday (23). Of 14 games in the Brasileirão, Vasco lost nine, drew three and won only two, which puts them in the penultimate position, in the relegation zone.
