Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt, Olympic champion, was the victim of a scam and lost all his pension money, reports the Jamaica Observer, something around US$ 10 million (R$ 51 million). Now he fears he will not be able to recoup his investment. According to the portal, the account would have been opened in 2012, without going through any transaction since then. Only US$ 2 thousand (R$ 10.2 thousand) remained.
The brokerage where Bolt’s money was held, Stocks and Securities Limited (SSL), suffered a $1.2 billion loss after an employee assisted an outside equity adviser. The company raised suspicions in August 2022, but failed to stop the scammer. The crime affected 30 people, including Bolt. The other victims also lost their investments.
According to the Jamaican Financial Services Commission (FSC), SSL had already been accused of unauthorized sales. It would bypass the transaction authorization procedures provided by the commission.
In addition, according to Essentially Sports, Bolt’s management team would have alerted SSL to the possibility of a coup.
Bolt, now 36, has won eight gold medals at the Olympics and another 11 at world championships, holding the record for the 100m and 200m sprints. He ended his career as a sprinter in 2017.
