US House approves bill that could ban TikTok in the country

They claim that China can take advantage of the company’s power to obtain data from American users. TikTok’s parent company denies this. According to Reuters, TikTok said it expects “the US Senate to consider the facts and listen to its voters” before making any decision. “We hope they realize the impact on the economy, on 7 million small businesses and on 170 millions of Americans who use our service,” said a TikTok spokesperson. What happens if the project is sanctioned? If it is approved in all homes, ByteDance must find a buyer within a period of up to six months. This new owner cannot have a relationship with the Chinese company. If the Chinese company refuses to comply with the American decision or if it does not find a buyer, the big tech companies Apple and Google, owner of Android, will have to remove TikTok from their app stores, App Store and Play Store, respectively. According to The New York Times, American justice may punish companies that may disobey the new rules against the Chinese app. TikTok’s problem with the US has been long-standing since the government of former president Donald Trump , TikTok is in the crosshairs of American authorities. In 2020, Trump tried to block new users from downloading TikTok and planned to ban the app’s operations, but lost a series of court battles over the move. That year, ByteDance denied Trump’s accusations, saying it stores American user data in the US and Singapore. In 2021, Joe Biden signed an executive order (a type of decree) that reversed his predecessor’s decision to ban Chinese apps TikTok and WeChat from the country.
