University creates master’s degree in artificial intelligence – 01/30/2023 – New in Folha

The University of Texas, in the United States, announced last Thursday (26) the creation of an online master’s program in the area of ​​artificial intelligence. The institution’s objective is to promote training on a large scale and at a more affordable cost than other programs in the area.

According to The New York Times, the cost of the course will be approximately US$ 10,000, equivalent to R$ 50,000. As a comparison, Johns Hopkins University, also in the United States, offers an online master’s course in artificial intelligence for US$45,000 (R$230,000).

The course will have machine learning classes (machine learning), artificial intelligence applications in the health area, and language processing, which helps virtual assistants understand voice commands. Students will also take ethics classes to understand the social implications of working in the field of artificial intelligence.

The resources for the creation of the new program came from the National Science Foundation, which, in 2020, made a donation of US$ 20 million for the University of Texas to create an institute dedicated to the area of ​​artificial intelligence.

The university’s expectation is that the hiring of professionals working with artificial intelligence will remain strong, even with the current wave of layoffs in technology companies.

The university plans to open enrollment for the new program in June of this year, with classes starting in 2024. The goal is to attract about 2,000 students a year.

Foreign students can apply for the program, but must prove their command of English through TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) tests.

Procedures for enrolling in the course can be found on the institution’s website. There are no grants or financial incentives for enrolling in the program.

In 2019, the university created an online master’s program in computer science. Two years later, in 2021, a similar program was created in the field of data science. Together, the two programs receive around 2,800 students.
