O Universityfrom Peru, has again shown support for the club’s physical trainer, Sebastián Avellino, who is imprisoned in Brazil for addressing Corinthians fans imitating monkeys and making racist gestures. After playing for the Peruvian Championship this Friday (14), the team lined up on the field with a banner in support of the trainer: “We are with you Sebastián A.”
The gesture of support took place before the match, which ended with a 2-0 victory for Universitario over Comercio. The Peruvian team published a photo of the banner on their social networks and the posts were marked by several comments criticizing the club’s stance.
This was not the first time that Universitário has shown support for Sebastian Avellino Vargas. The club had released a statement criticizing the decision of the Court of Justice of São Paulo and questioning the version of the Secretariat of Public Security. “In recent hours, the honor of a professional from our club has been tarnished. Sebastián Avellino has been treated as a delinquent in Brazil, spending the night in detention, which we consider to be something unacceptable.”
Three Corinthians fans were heard as witnesses. Two days after the case, videos released on social networks reveal that the professional made monkey gestures towards the alvinegra fans during the reserves warm-up. In addition to the videos, which circulate on social networks, fans had already declared that they had seen the physical trainer’s racist gestures.
The complaint also states that Avellino called a group of supporters “monos” (“monkeys” in Spanish). Last Thursday, the Court of Justice of the State of São Paulo denied the habeas corpus requested by the defense.
Corinthians and Universitario face each other again next Tuesday for the Copa Sudamericana, at the Monumental stadium, in Lima. In the first leg, the Brazilian team won at home by 1-0 and has the advantage of the draw.
