Unifap students win 32 medals at the Paralympic Games – News of Brazil

Twelve academics from the Federal University of Amapá (Unifap) participated in the Paralympic Connection and won 32 medals for Amapá. The competition took place in the city of Goiânia, in Goiás, in the last week of June and had the participation of more than 200 para-athletes from different states, who competed in five modalities. Para-athletes from the Amapá Federation of Parasports Commission (FPA) brought a total of 102 medals to the state.
Unifap paralympic students are part of the Brazilian Paralympic Reference Center (CRPB) project, a partnership between the Institution and the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB). The project operates at the Marco Zero university campus in Ecuador, in Macapá (AP), and is currently coordinated by Marlon Gomes, who is also a coach for the para-athletes. All committee members won medals.
Isabelle Soares, student of the Secretariat Technology course at Unifap, was one of the members of the commission and brought three medals to the state: bronze in discus, silver in javelin and gold in shot put.
“We had been training for months for this competition. It was a good feeling, to be carrying the name of the course and the University, a great responsibility”, declared Isabelle.
According to Marlon Gomes, the conquest of the para-athletes is evidence of the success of the CRPB project and attracts more and more interested parties, which is a reason for happiness, but also for concern with the service capacity.
“CPB and Unifap pay for the salaries of professionals and the physical structure of the project, and Unifap also provides 15 interns who support us, but it is already becoming insufficient for the demand. Soon [tempo] we will have to expand the project to be able to serve everyone who comes to us”points out Marlon.
According to Isabelle Soares, this was her first participation in the Paralympic Connection for Unifap and she is already preparing to participate in the next competition, which takes place in September and October. “People are apprehensive, anxious. Everyone there is a competitor, in any case, from other states or from ours, and we work hard to win”, affirm.
The academic tells that she advises para-athletes who are starting their careers not to give up, no matter how difficult the challenges are. “We will find everything, but you have to be persistent, warrior. I can, I can, that’s my phrase. Every effort is worth it, despite being exhausting, and in the end there is all the reward, the recognition”concludes Isabelle.
In 2023, the Paralympic Connection began to be held in three regional phases and one national phase, with participants from seven states and the Federal District (MS, PI, GO, AP, AC and TO). The event, held by the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB), brings together competitions from the Intercentros, the University Paralympics and the Military Paralympics.
