Senator Sergio Moro (União Brasil-PR) presented, this Wednesday (8), a request to unarchive a project that deals with imprisonment after conviction in the second instance. Authored by former Senator Lasier Martins (PSD-RS), PLS 166/2018 ended up being shelved in December 2022, due to the end of the previous legislature. The measure proposes an amendment to the Code of Criminal Procedure to regulate imprisonment in the second instance.

A substitute for the original text was approved by the Senate’s Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Committee in 2019, but the text was not included in the plenary agenda.

“I presented the request for the Houses of Congress to resume, as soon as possible, an issue that is very dear to society. Several criminals, including people convicted of corruption – a serious crime that threatens democracy – have been set free,” Moro said in a statement.

Moro’s request needs the support of 27 senators for PLS 166/2018 to be unarchived. By 7 pm this Wednesday, the measure had already obtained 10 signatures, according to the congressman’s advisory.
