The unemployment rate in the quarter ending in November was 7.5%. It is the lowest index since February 2015. Specifically for quarters ending in November, the index is the lowest since 2014, when it reached 6.6%.

The data is part of the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad Contínua), released this Friday (29) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

In the quarter ended in August, the rate was 7.8%. The indicator for the quarter ending in August 2022 was 8.1%.

The result was influenced by the number of employed people, estimated at 100.5 million, the highest since the historical series began in 2012. The number represents growth of 0.9% in 3 months.

The number of unemployed remained stable, 8.2 million people. It is the smallest contingent since the quarter ended in April 2015, when there were 8.15 million Brazilians looking for work.

Occupation

The proportion of employed people in the working-age population rose 0.4 percentage points (pp) compared to the previous moving quarter, reaching 57%. Of the 853 thousand people included in this universe, the majority, 515 thousand, were hired with a formal contract.

With this reinforcement, the number of workers with a formal contract totals 37.7 million, the second highest level in the historical series, second only to the quarter ended in June 2014, when there were 37.8 million.

The number of unregistered employees was 13.4 million. Despite remaining stable over the period, it is the largest in the historical series.

Of the ten economic activities analyzed by IBGE, there was an increase in the number of people employed only in industry, 369 thousand people, and in construction, 199 thousand. Other activities remained stable.

“The expansion of construction activity occurred mainly through informality, with the increase in employment without a formal contract and self-employment without CNPJ, while the industry boosted formal work”, said the IBGE Pnad coordinator, Adriana Beringuy.

In the quarter, the informality rate was 39.2% of the employed population, which represents 39.4 million informal workers. In the previous three months, the rate had been 39.1%.

Performance

The worker’s real average income reached R$3,034, an increase of 2.3% in the quarter. Compared to last year, the increase was 3.8%. In the quarter, this growth was more pronounced among employees with a formal contract in the private sector (2.1%) and self-employed workers with CNPJ (7.6%).

“In the annual comparison, no form of insertion showed a drop in income, whether in formal or informal work. All registered positive changes”, highlights the IBGE researcher.

The IBGE survey is carried out with a sample of 211 thousand households across the country and seeks information on any form of work, such as contract workers with a formal contract, self-employment and informal work.

Caged

Another reference statistic on the labor market is the General Register of Employed and Unemployed Persons (Caged), compiled by the Ministry of Labor and Employment, which collects data only on admissions and dismissals of workers with a work permit.

The most recent release, this Thursday (28), showed that November had a positive balance of more than 130 thousand vacancies. Between January and November, 1,914,467 jobs were created in the country.
