Rate was driven mainly by the decline in São Paulo

The drop in the unemployment rate in the country, from 8% in the second quarter to 7.7% in the third quarter of this year, was mainly driven by the decline in the indicator in São Paulo. According to data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Continuous PNAD), the rate in the state fell from 7.8% to 7.1% in the period.

“The decline in Brazil was not a process spread across the states. Most of the Federation’s units show a tendency towards a reduction in the unemployment rate, but only three states register a statistically significant drop, mainly due to the reduction in unemployment. And São Paulo is important given the size of the job market, which greatly influences the drop at a national level”,

explains IBGE researcher Adriana Beringuy.

In addition to São Paulo, the states of Maranhão (from 8.8% to 6.7%) and Acre (from 9.3% to 6.2%) showed a significant drop in the unemployment rate.

In 23 Federation Units, the rate remained statistically stable. Only in Roraima did the unemployment rate increase, from 5.1% to 7.6%.

In the third quarter of this year, the highest unemployment rates were observed in Bahia (13.3%), Pernambuco (13.2%) and Amapá (12.6%). The lowest rates were in the states of Rondônia (2.3%), Mato Grosso (2.4%) and Santa Catarina (3.6%).

Comparisons

When comparing by sex, the unemployment rate in the third quarter was 6.4% for men and 9.3% for women. In relation to color or race, the rate among white people was 5.9%, while among black people the indicator was 9.6% and among brown people, 8.9%.

Considering the level of education, the highest unemployment rate was among people with incomplete secondary education (13.5%). For people with incomplete higher education, the rate was 8.3%, more than double that seen for those with completed higher education (3.5%).
