On Monday morning (1st), four young people were found dead inside a BMW car at the Balneário Camboriú bus station. A 19-year-old girl and three boys aged 16, 21 and 24 died.
The Santa Catarina Civil Police’s main suspicion is that the group was the victim of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning — an odorless and colorless toxic gas produced by the incomplete combustion of any substance containing carbon —, which leaked from the engine to inside the vehicle they were in.
The case takes place just over three months after the death of Ceará banker José Bezerra de Menezes Neto, known as Binho Bezerra, 66, and his wife, Luciana, 62, in a luxury condominium in Guarujá, on the coast of São Paulo.
In July 2023, carbon monoxide poisoning was also the cause of death of a couple found dead in a chalet at the Aroma de Jasmim guesthouse, in Monte Verde, district of Camanducaia (MG).
What happens when you inhale carbon monoxide?
Death from CO inhalation occurs within minutes, especially if the person is asleep, drunk or in another condition that makes perception difficult.
“Inhaled carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin, which prevents the transport of oxygen. If you inhale a small amount, you have mild symptoms. It all depends on time, exposure and quantity [inalada]”, says Andrea Sette, pulmonologist at Hospital São Luiz Itaim, from Rede D’Or.
What are the symptoms of CO inhalation?

What is known so far in the case of the four young people?
The vehicle the victims were in was a BMW they were in and had recently undergone customization on the exhaust to increase the engine’s roar. It is still unknown who owned the car.
Civil Police experts identified a perforation between the engine and the vehicle’s dashboard, causing carbon monoxide to leak into the interior of the car where the group was. As the air conditioning was on, the windows were closed, concentrating the gas in the confined space.
According to delegate Bruno Effori, responsible for the case, the group went to the bus station to pick up a young woman who was arriving in the city by bus. She reported to the police that, when she met the group, they reported feeling unwell, feeling sick, vomiting and shaking.
According to her, everyone was feeling unwell, but apparently conscious. They then decided to stay there for three, four hours, with the vehicle running, with the air conditioning on.
