In an official note, the UEA mourned the death of Amazonino and thanked the contribution made by the politician

Manaus (AM) – Former governor Amazonino Mendes left his legacy in public higher education. Created by the politician in 2001, the State University of Amazonas (UEA) was designed to promote teaching and scientific knowledge in the state.

True to his proposal, Amazonino Mendes, in a video published in 2021 in honor of the 20th anniversary of the creation of the University, congratulated those from humble origins who earned a higher education degree thanks to the institution.

“Its creation represented a real revolution in education and in our history (…). The UEA is our heritage,” he said.

In an official note, the UEA mourned the death of Amazonino and thanked the politician for his contribution. The institution also highlighted the former governor’s dedication to including the poorest in higher education.

The State University of Amazonas (UEA) deeply regrets the death of Amazonino Armando Mendes, former governor of Amazonas. In this moment of pain, the upper management emphasizes its eternal gratitude for the creation of the UEA and its invaluable contribution to the progress of the state of Amazonas.

He also took the opportunity to show solidarity with family members, especially his sister Marly Mendes and niece Isolda Prado, who are part of the institution’s teaching staff. May God comfort your hearts and give you strength to transform all pain into faith and hope.

Amazonino Mendes had a special fondness for the UEA. He always stressed that he considered the creation of the university his greatest administrative legacy.

He recounted, with satisfaction, that the UEA was born from the “stubbornness of a caboclo from the interior of Eirunepé”, who knew how to assess the need that the Amazonian people, especially the most needy, had to have access to public higher education. “The university needs to be a place for the poor too”, emphasized Amazonino.

The academic community of the institution is grateful for the possibility of professional growth that Amazonino Mendes gave to the population of Amazonas, mainly in the interior.

The UEA is currently located in the 62 municipalities of the Amazon, making it possible for everyone to study, without distinction. She recognizes the legacy he left for the history of the Amazon.

UEA history

The academic activities started in 2001, on the 3rd of August. On June 30, 2005, the first class graduated, with 7,150 students from the Normal Superior course of the Teacher Training Program (Proformar) – a project that won the Millennium Goals award and appointed by the United Nations for the Education, Science and Culture (Unesco) as a model to be followed by other countries.

Currently, UEA has more than 25,000 students regularly enrolled in undergraduate and graduate courses. Considered the largest multi-campus university in the country, the institution has five academic units in the capital and 13 higher education centers in the interior of Amazonas.

With Bachelors, Degrees and Technological courses, the institution promotes postgraduate classes in various areas of research. The UEA offers 286 regular courses, 64 of specialization, 15 of Masters and five of Doctorate.
