President of the PSDB-Cidadania federation in the state of São Paulo, the mayor of Santo André, Paulo Serra, says that the toucans will have losses and gains from mayors in the coming months, but dismisses a “devastating” scenario.
Toucan municipal administrators are being harassed by parties such as PSD, PL, Republicans and PSB. Next Monday (26), former President Jair Bolsonaro will participate in a meeting with PL deputies that should have as one of the agendas the affiliation of Toucan mayors.
In 2020, the PSDB elected 182 mayors in the state, a number that grew to 238, packed by the fact that the party controls the Palácio dos Bandeirantes.
After losing the election, the number ebbed and today is around 150. In Serra’s forecast, the PSDB should stabilize at a level of 50 to 100 mayors in the state. The party is also negotiating the affiliation of eight municipal managers, according to him.
Most of the mayors who left the party are from small or medium-sized cities. An exception was that of Jundiaí, Luiz Fernando Machado, who last Saturday (17) joined the PL.
Serra claims that the PSDB has decided to launch a candidate next year in cities where it loses mayors. “That’s the rule. If you remove the mayor, we launch a candidate”, he says.
