Court investigates Bolsonaro’s speech against the electoral system; requires deposition by March 16
The Inspector General of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Benedito Gonçalves, asked the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, for an audience to hear the former Minister of Justice and former Secretary of Public Security of the Federal District Anderson Towers. The action could make former President Jair Bolsonaro ineligible.
Bolsonaro is investigated for attacks on the electoral system carried out in a meeting with ambassadors at the Palácio da Alvorada in July last year. The corregidor wants to hear Torres about his eventual involvement in the meeting and about the circumstances related to the so-called “draft of coup” seized in his house by the Federal Police. The inclusion of the document as evidence against Bolsonaro in the investigation was unanimously approved by the TSE last month.
If authorized, the hearing must be held on March 16, by videoconference. The testimony depends on Moraes’ endorsement because Torres is under arrest in the scope of the investigation under his report. The former secretary is suspected of failing to lead the public security forces on January 8, when extremists invaded and vandalized the headquarters of the three Powers in Brasília.
Gonçalves scheduled for the same day, at the TSE headquarters, testimonials by Colonel Eduardo Gomes da Silva and Federal Police officials Ivo de Carvalho Peixinho and Mateus de Castro Polastro.
In the scope of this investigation, which is the most advanced among the 16 Electoral Investigation Actions (Aijes) that are being processed against Bolsonaro in the Electoral Court, the former Minister of the Civil House Ciro Nogueira has also been heard.
