Tropicana Las Vegas, hotel and casino, closes its doors – 04/03/2024 – Tourism

The Tropicana Las Vegas hotel and casino closed its activities this Tuesday (2). Opened in 1957, in the city of the same name, the establishment was one of the first resorts in the city and was also the scene of filming in ‘007 – Diamonds Are Forever’ (1971), hosting actor Sean Connery in the role of James Bond. A baseball stadium will be built at the site.

The arena has an estimated value of R$7.6 billion (US$1.5 billion) and will have 33 thousand seats. The house, with construction and design managed by the companies BIG and HNTB, will be home to the Oakland Athletics team (known as the Oakland A’s), from Major League Baseball, the MLB, the sport’s main North American league. The work is part of the region’s renovation project to become a sports entertainment hub.

Located on the Las Vegas Strip, one of the busiest areas in the city, the stadium will have the largest glass window in the world, with a roof of five overlapping arches, according to information released by the team to MLB. Another highlight of the project includes a 1,600 m² screen — considered the largest in the league.

“All direct sunlight is blocked, while all soft daylight can bathe the field in natural light. The resulting architecture is like a spherical armadillo, designed for passive shading – an architectural response to Nevada’s climate,” explained Bjarke Ingels , founder and creative director from BIG to MLB.

The “city of sin”, in Nevada, is already part of the Formula 1 racing calendar and hosted the inauguration of the Sphere last year, a spherical LED structure, which can be seen throughout the motorsport circuit.
