The solemnity of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) this Tuesday (7) in honor of the President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), was attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and became the stage of criticism of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), was present, but was not honored. During the Bolsonaro government, Pacheco became known for defending the electronic voting system, while the then Chief Executive raised suspicions against the work of the TSE.
Lira, despite having defended the polls, avoided opposing Bolsonaro’s offensive against the institutions.
The retribution for the defense of the Judiciary made by Pacheco came this Tuesday (7). Minister Cármen Lúcia spoke on behalf of the court and thanked the senator for the court’s defense.
She said that Pacheco is an “example” and that “the people deserve respect and state offices impose the institutional composure that the senator has”.
“There is no longer a place in Brazil for disrespect in the performance of public functions and who sets the tone of state seriousness and physical respect in the first place is the public agent. The senator is a model in this attitude of moderation and commitment”, he said. .
She did not mention Bolsonaro, but stated that the country experienced conflicts “instigated by contamination of ideas of democratic destruction, by distilled lies, publicized falsehoods, doubts raised against institutions and agents without any basis other than the mere desire to undo the deed and legitimize” .
“We do not live in times of human or civilizing facilities. Unlike that, we have experienced turmoil with which we no longer counted and we hoped to overcome anti-democratic ideas and contrary to freedoms, but authoritarian daydreams do not rest or give peace”, he said.
And he continued: “The latest times in Brazilian history have shown attacks on democracy, on individual, social and collective freedoms, on elections, an instrument of democratic legitimacy, and on the Judiciary, the ultimate guarantor of the legal efficacy and social effectiveness of the Constitution of primacy of the law over voluntarism”.
Pacheco stated that the homage is of “inestimable” value, given the “decisive” role played by the TSE in maintaining the country’s democratic values.
“I closely followed the performance of the president of the TSE, the eminent minister Alexandre de Moraes, and I am a witness that Your Excellency conducted the election absolutely committed to the Federal Constitution and the legislation of the country”, said the president of the Senate.
“Despite all the attacks launched against the electoral system, Datafolha found, in the middle of last year, that about 80% of the population trusted the electronic voting machines. the investigation carried out by this Court is legitimate.”
