Treatment that can cure you patient in terminal stage of cancer is disputed by experts

Marc Abreu states that medical-scientific activities are guided by professional medical ethics, US legislation and regulation

This week, a form of therapy used with a patient with prostate cancer created debate among health professionals. The technique was applied by Brazilian neuroscientist Marc Abreu to treat patient Scott Miller.

The method uses the induction of heat shock proteins by raising the temperature in a controlled manner by the brain.

Although the clinical case was presented at the Annual Congress of the Society for Thermal Medicinein San Diego, United States, specialists pointed out that the method has no scientific basis and that there are no studies on the efficiency of the technique.

The production of CNN spoke with José Alencar, a cardiologist and PhD student in Bioethics at the University of Porto, who pointed out that this would be an invented treatment protocol, since there is no literature on this therapy. Still according to Alencar, submitting the patient to this method was unethical.

According to the doctoral student in Bioethics, since the end of the 2nd World War, any new treatment must be approved by the Ethics Council. This measure would be a way to guarantee the total safety and integrity of patients. And, in the case of the induction of heat shock proteins, the submission to the Ethics Council would not have happened.

The specialist also states that there are four basic precepts of medicine: Beneficence, Non-Maleficence, Autonomy and Justice. He explains that, without any research on the subject, it is impossible to guarantee the “Beneficence” of the treatment.

Thus, the patient was not necessarily cured by the therapy used. It would also be impossible to prove “Non-Maleficence”, which can generate several risks.

Alencar also warns that, even in the case of a terminally ill person, the patient’s autonomy is not unlimited, and the doctor should not authorize procedures without clinical safeguards.

The doctor also stressed that the cure cannot be attested, since there is no study or scientific research about it. He adds that the disclosure of the effectiveness of the treatment is not recommended because it can induce patients to seek technology and abandon proven methods.

The production of CNN also talked with other specialists in oncology and oncogenetics. They stressed that science is based on documents and evidence and, as there are no studies on this therapy, there is no room for discussion about treatment.

Still according to the specialists, each and every extraordinary method requires documentation, something that Marc Abreu would not have done. Another point made by the doctors was that, if this were a way to cure cancer, it should already be in official articles in the field of medicine.
