The dispute between federal deputies of the opposition and the government base intensified, this Tuesday (29), during the meeting of the CPI of the Movement of Landless Rural Workers (MST). A technical tie, 13 to 13, in the vote for one of the 20 requirements expected to be voted on by the collegiate put “in check” the strength of both sides.

Faced with a tie, the president of the CPI, Lieutenant Colonel Zucco (Republicanos-RS), established the understanding that, due to lack of a majority, the application would be withdrawn. The understanding ended up benefiting the government supporters when they managed to reject the summons of the president of the National Supply Company (Conab), Edegar Pretto.

Despite the defeat, the opposition tried to join forces to prevent the requests from being withdrawn from the agenda. Only two calls were approved with a very close vote, that of Jaime Messias Silva, director-president of the Institute of Land and Agrarian Reform of Alagoas (Iteral); and José Rodrigo Marques Quaresma, Iteral’s executive administrative manager.

Faced with the impasse and the difficulty in approving the summons, the rapporteur of the CPI, deputy Ricardo Salles (PL-SP), decided to close the work. “Since the requirements cannot be approved without the CPI’s regimental change, I suggest closing the works”, he said.

The opposition expected a change in the composition of the collegiate amid the impasse over the entry of new parties into the government base, such as Republicans, PP and União Brasil.

Among the requests scheduled for voting, but which were not even analyzed, was the request for the breach of bank, tax, telephone and telematic secrecy by João Pedro Stédile, the main leader of the MST. In 2022, Stédile was one of the first to openly announce the resumption of land invasions if Lula regained power.

Another request that was not analyzed by the collegiate asked for the breach of confidentiality of the former member of the MST, current leader of the National Fight Front, José Rainha Junior. The activist responds in court to the crimes of extortion and criminal association against rural producers in the region of Pontal do Paranapanema (SP) between the years 2021 and 2022.

Before the start of the CPI meeting, rapporteur Salles told the press that, if he encountered difficulties in approving the requirements, he intended to deliver the final report next Monday (4/9).
