Manaus (AM) – Countdown to the 3rd edition of Open Extreme Manaus in 2023. The event will be held next Saturday (21), at the Vasco Vasques Convention Center, starting at 7pm. The program features 19 Kickboxing and MMA fights.

Tickets can be exchanged by donating cans of powdered milk, which will benefit riverside families affected by the drought of rivers in the Amazon.

With the aim of promoting a sporting meeting between more experienced and younger generations, the Open Extreme Manaus began to be promoted in 2015 in Manaus. Since then, there have been countless editions and a lot of history lived on the “field”, or rather, in the octagon. The expectation, this time, is to bring together around 3,500 people. The duels are divided into categories: male, female and social inclusion.

“I am very happy and grateful to be holding this event. It has everything to be a success, just like the other editions were. It’s worth highlighting: sport is for everyone and changes lives”,

said Marcelo Pontes, organizer of Open Extreme Manaus.

Straight from Mexico

UFC fighter, Amazonian Diego Lopes, is already in Manaus to be a VIP at the event. Living in Mexico for 5 years, Lopes brought Isay and Caleb “Bandido”, athletes trained by him on the Brazilian Warriors team, to fulfill their dream of fighting outside their home country in search of victory in the octagon.

Revealed by Clube Freiras, a jiu-jitsu project in the Mutirão neighborhood in the East Zone of Manaus, Diego Lopes has won important titles in his career. There are at least 33 victories. The most recent, celebrated after a confrontation with Canadian Gavin Tucker at UFC Nashville in the United States in August.

Social Inclusion Struggles

At 27 years old, Amazonian Walmar Pacheco, better known as “Mazinho” in the world of sport, has medals and numerous participations in fighting events. The athlete with down syndrome began training 11 years ago with the Brazilian Jiu-Jítsu team, led by master Márcio Pontes and a reference in the Alvorada neighborhood, Central-West Zone of Manaus. For his family, his living condition was not an obstacle, on the contrary, it served as an impetus for him to develop and win many admirers.

“Mazinho still has difficulty speaking a few words, but since he started jiu-jitsu, he has made great progress physically and mentally. Today, he can actually pronounce a few words, which allows us to communicate. At the gym, he is the training star. Everyone likes him. The team has a great rapport with him and he feels at home there, thank God”,

said his uncle, Airton Pacheco.

After a period without training due to the pandemic and for personal reasons, Mazinho returned to the mat focusing on preparing to participate in the Open Extreme Manaus. Among 19 MMA and Kickboxing fights scheduled for the event, two are aimed at social inclusion: Mazinho x Felipe Fúria and Haroldo Souza x Chico Preto.

Wheelchair user Haroldo Souza

At 66 years old, Haroldo is a wheelchair athlete, diagnosed with paralysis in the first days of his life. Today, alongside his coach, Luiz Guerreiro, he has overcome many challenges in sport and in the search for a better quality of life and is already looking forward to participating in the event for the first time.

“This opportunity is spectacular. Social inclusion is unparalleled. We are motivated to have real inclusion and little by little it has appeared. Luiz (coach) saw me capable of training”,

highlighted Haroldo.

For Luiz Guerreiro, including martial art in Haroldo’s life is gratifying. The athlete seeks to enjoy and learn a lot during training. Not to mention that his story inspires many people.

“I have always seen him very active, even in a wheelchair, making an effort to go out, doing other exercises, working out, for me, this is very rewarding as a coach. A few weeks ago he asked me if I would ever go to the rink and the answer came,”

said Guerreiro.

According to Marcelo Pontes, organizer of Open Extreme Manaus, in addition to promoting the meeting of renowned fighters in the state with younger fighters, the event seeks to strengthen social inclusion and enable people with disabilities to have the opportunity to showcase their talents.

“We always bring these fights during the program, so that both those who are there on the day and those who are watching online are impressed by the capacity of a PCD. Often, they just need one door open for others to open,”

highlighted.
